BBC OKs 5D STOP

DSLRs that shoot HD video, and in particular the Canon 5D have been the subject of technical scrutiny and debate since appearing nearly 18 months ago.  In its original evaluation, the BBC dismissed the 5D as FULL HD  because of moire and strobing effects.  This, combined with a high compression codec, means so far as the BBC were concerned it usefulness in HD broadcast television was non-existent.

CREWS.TV members, especially in New Zealand did many of their own tests to see for themselves whether or not it has a future in TV.  Opinions were split, and remain split, even now.

But after many many applications of broadcasting 5D & 7D footage on other networks, the BBC has finally given a green light for the Canon 5D as an acceptable HD originating format.

The misleading  thing about the resulting headlines is that the approval was limited to one specific drama.

But has the Pandora’s box been opened?
